Morning coffee in hand
Count the hours yet un-spanned,
I’m assured that we’ll arrive
At closing time. “Come five!”

When we think we have dealt
With all things done and said
The hands of the clock
Seem to stutter instead.

The door does not slam
On the end of a week.
Just a slow, stressful swing
On old hinges which squeak.
