Horses typically swell their lungs when a saddle is put on. You may need to knee their belly in order to properly tighten the girth.

For what it is worth
When I had a smaller girth
I did ride on horseback
Down to the river and back.
The rides were all dusty.
My lips often got crusty.
A drink from the rapids
Was a part of my habits.
